In 2008, Marienbad celebrated its 200th city anniversary. Marienbad is the second largest spa in the Czech Republic and rich with mineral springs. 40 springs originate directly in Marienbad and about 100 in the surrounding area. The area of today’s spa belonged to the Premonstratensian monastery at Tepl whose abbot Karel Kaspar Reitenberger in 1808 enforced the construction of the first spa in Marienbad based on the initiative of the monastery’s physician Johann Josef Nehr who discovered the healing effects of the springs. In 1866 Marienbad was granted city rights and at the beginning of the 20th century it already belonged to Europe’s leading spas. Apart from the large amount of springs, the extensive parks, the centrally located spa boardwalk and the iron colonnade built in 1889 are the main characteristics of the city. The “Singing Fountain“ in from of the main colonnade is a meeting point for tourists, spa guests and local citizens alike.
